A gifted and outspoken feminist and one of the most acclaimed directors anywhere in the world, Agnes Varda's first film (LA POINTE COURTE, 1955) was said to have launched the French New Wave. Fifty-five years later, headstrong survivor Varda is still a patient observer of her time and her people, like the pop singer in CLEO FROM 5 TO 7, the lovers in LE BONHEUR (HAPPINESS) or the drifter in VAGABOND.

"I have fought so much since I started... for something that comes from emotion, from visual emotion, sound emotion, feeling, and finding a shape for that," Varda has said.

Varda will appear in person for a Sneak Preview of her latest film, the autobiographical THE BEACHES OF AGNES as well as a mini-retrospective featuring highlights of her 55 year career as a filmmaker. Los Angeles artists Fallen Fruit will join Agnes for a double feature of her “GLEANERS” films, documentaries about persons who collect and utilize cast off food items. Her film on the life of her husband, filmmaker Jacques Demy (THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG) JACQUOT DE NANTES and films made during her LA years in the free-spirited 1960s -- LIONS LOVE (AND LIES) featuring Andy Warhol's Viva and the writers of "Hair", and MUR MURS (A look at Los Angeles Murals) -- among others, will be shown.

The Cinematheque will present a sneak preview of THE BEACHES OF AGNES along with a series of Varda's masterpieces, with the director herself live and in-person.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Unifrance and the French Film and TV Office in Los Angeles, French Embassy. With the support of ELMA. (European Languages and Movies in America).
