Acting For Directors

The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute hosts an intensive one-day workshop for directors at Palm Spring ShortFest in August and during the festival, providing practical techniques to get superior performances from actors.

When resources are tight, you can’t afford to get average work from your actors. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to use intentions and objectives to make your scenes more powerful, and most importantly, answer the age-old question: how do I get results from an actor who just can’t seem to give me what I want?

The workshop consists of two two-hour sessions in which experts from the Strasberg Institute apply their understanding of actors – what they need, and common problems they encounter – to guide you through an actual shoot using material you supply from your own short film screenplay or feature script. These are not theoretical exercises. With instructional guidance, you will shoot your own material with professional Strasberg actors, review the footage with the instructors, and then shoot the scene again to experience the difference made by through changes in how and what you communicate to your actors.

The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute is one of the best known and respected professional acting studios in the country. It teaches Lee Strasberg’s “method,” perhaps the most famous acting technique in the world. The Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute has produced some of the most innovative and popular actors working today, including Steve Buscemi (The Sopranos), Matt Dillon (Crash), Rebecca Gayheart (Medium), Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos), Ray Liotta (Smith), Frank Medrano (Entourage), Sienna Miller (Alfie), Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), James Spader (Boston Legal), Uma Thurman (My Super Ex-Girlfriend), Clare Danes (Shopgirl), Scarlett Johansson (The Black Dahlia), John Leguizama (ER), Adam Sandler (Click) and Chandra Wilson (Grey’s Anatomy).
