Gatefield Caustival, a Nigerian arts and film festival focused on social justice, will launch its inaugural edition this month.

The festival, themed State of Nigeria Live, will explore and challenge the current political and social landscape of Nigeria through the lens of art and film. It will address critical issues facing Nigeria’s democracy, including themes around press freedom, human rights, free speech and civic participation, particularly in the face of rising authoritarian trends.

Attendees can expect film screenings, art installations and exhibitions, live music and spoken word performances, panel discussions, and elaborate networking segments.

Some of the films that will be screened at the festival include:

African Moot by Shameela Seedat: A South African documentary following young lawyers in the African Human Rights Moot Court competition. Set in Gaborone, Botswana, the film highlights their passion for human rights as they debate fictional cases on critical social issues.

Everything Must Fall by Rehad Desai: In 2015, demonstrations against high tuition fees in South Africa grew into the fiercest national protest movement against the government since the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.

No U-Turn by Ikenna Nnaebue: This film delves into the real challenges faced by African immigrants, exploring the motivations behind migration and the harsh realities of the journey.

Where is Chijioke by Chude Jideonwo: This film follows Obianuju Iloanya’s ten-year search for her missing brother, who was kidnapped by a corrupt and trigger-happy Nigerian police squad. Despite the confessions of a policeman, justice remains elusive. The documentary highlights her legal battles and a ten-day solo protest on the anniversary of his disappearance.

Gatefield Caustival will take place at Exhibition Pavilion, Garki, Abuja from 13-14 September.
